The first tune is from a Quebec musician ….. I wrote the second tune with reference to one of the previous owners of Castletown House. Aifric’s Grandmother, Lena Boylan was a local historian in Celbridge and wrote extensively about the history of Castletown House and its owners, the Connolly Family. The Irish Georgian Society published a piece by Lena in 1968, and this bit caught my imagination:
“About the Year 1868 Tom Connolly was well known in Paris for both his coach and riding horses. In fact his coach and equipage was second to none. This resulted in a friendly competition between the Emperor and himself one day in the Bois de Boulogne. The judges, it is said, did not like to award the prize to Tom, without ascertaining from both competitors that no detail had escaped their notice. Napoleon having pointed out the plaiting of his horses’ manes and the turnout of his grooms, Tom merely drew their attention to the fact that his horses were shod in silver. Tom had the verdict of the judges. The chief of the Paris police subsequently called on him to reduce the splendour of his equipage”.
