about

The Foggy Dew is a well-known patriotic song that chronicles the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916. There are many versions, though the melody dates prior to this time. We’ve stripped the tune back and opted for a contemplative mood, rather than its usual more military style. “Fáinne Gael an Lae” translates as the dawning of the day and is an appropriate tune to mark the optimism of Independence. When we recorded these tunes, the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising was in sight. However, the mood of the nation at the time we recorded the album was downbeat due to a long economic recession and the policy of austerity that was being inflicted upon regular folk to pay for a greed few. The reality of this new oppression was very much on our minds when we played these two tunes.
